Our delightful city abounds with preserved historic buildings, beautiful parks and gardens.
Boasting buildings resplendent in their Victorian and Edwardian detail, dynamic art deco architecture, wrought iron garden seats and old-style street lamps, Victoria Avenue is recognised as one of New Zealand's most attractive main streets. In summer, Wanganui In Bloom sees hundreds of hanging baskets, overflowing with potted colour, adorn the central city.
You can collect an Old Town Heritage brochure or a Brass Rubbings brochure from the Information Centre and stroll at your leisure viewing many of Wanganui's gorgeous historic preserved or restored buildings and other significant sites. The Opera House, for example, is an all-timber masterpiece, built in 1899, which features massive Tuscan-style pillars.
